Freestanding vs. Wall-Mounted Garage Shelving

Garage shelving comes in two broad kinds: units that stand on the floor and shelves that hang on the wall. The right one depends on your floor space, your walls and what you plan to store.

Freestanding shelving

A freestanding unit stands on its own feet or casters. It is usually the simplest to set up and you can move it later.

  • Floor space: it takes up floor area, so check its depth against the space you need to walk and park.
  • Anchoring: many manufacturers still require or recommend fixing a tall unit to the wall so it cannot tip. Some ratings apply only when it is anchored. Check the anchoring requirement on each product page.
  • Moving it: units sold with casters can be rolled, but they are often rated lower on casters than on their feet.

Wall-mounted shelving

Wall-mounted shelves fix to the wall and keep the floor clear, which helps in a garage where cars, bikes or a mower need the floor.

  • Installation: they have to be fastened into something that can carry the load, such as wall studs or joists, using the method the manufacturer gives. NewAge’s wall shelf manuals, for example, say the units “must be installed into structurally sound overhead/wall joists or supports”.
  • Your walls: if you rent, or your walls are finished or hard to drill, a freestanding unit may suit you better. If you are unsure your wall can take the load, ask a qualified professional.
  • Ratings: a wall shelf’s rating depends on correct installation into the right support. Read its conditions carefully.

Questions to decide between them

  1. How much floor can you give up? If the answer is very little, look at wall-mounted shelves or a shallow freestanding unit.
  2. Can you fasten to the wall? If not, choose a unit whose manufacturer does not require anchoring, and check the conditions on its rating.
  3. Will you move it? If yes, freestanding with casters. Check the caster rating.
  4. How heavy is what you store? Compare per-shelf ratings and their conditions. Our guide to weight ratings explains how.
