Garage Wall Track Compatibility

Wall track, slatwall and pegboard each take their own hooks. A hook made for one system may not fit another, and a hook that looks like it fits may not hold what its rating says. The safe rule is simple: only trust a fit that the maker states in writing.

Three different interfaces

  • Wall track is a rail fixed to the wall. Hooks hang on the rail’s profile and slide along it. Rail shapes differ between product lines, even within one brand.
  • Slatwall has horizontal grooves. Hooks slot into a groove. Groove shape and spacing are not the same on every panel.
  • Pegboard has a grid of holes. Hole size and spacing vary, so pegboard hooks are not universal either.

For how the panel types differ, see slatwall vs pegboard.

A fit statement must name the system

“Fits most tracks” or “universal” tells you very little. A useful statement names the rail, panel or product line the hook is made for, in the maker’s own documents. Our product pages show what each maker lists as compatible. If a combination is not in the maker’s documents, we treat it as not documented. That is not the same as “does not fit”. It means nobody has stated it.

Mixing brands

Some makers say their accessories work with another brand’s system, and some say the opposite. Where a maker names the other system, you have something to go on. Where nobody does, a hook may sit loose, rock or slip, and any rating it carries applies only to the combination its maker documents. If you already own a system, start with that maker’s own accessories.

Ratings do not add up

A rail or panel has its own rating, and so does each hook, each with conditions. Many makers rate wall track per rail or per foot, and slatwall per panel or per area, and often only when screwed into studs. Read both ratings and their conditions. Do not add them together, and do not assume the higher one applies. Our guide to weight ratings explains how to read conditions.
