Mobile vs. Stationary Garage Workbenches

A workbench can stay in one place, roll on casters, change height or fold against the wall. Each type suits a different garage. Start with how you work and how much floor you can spare.
Stationary benches
A fixed bench stands on legs or feet and stays put. It suits heavy work and a garage with a dedicated corner. Some are designed to be bolted down or fixed to the wall; check what the maker requires.
Mobile benches
A bench on casters lets you move work to the car or clear the floor to park. Check how many casters lock and whether the maker gives a separate rating for the bench on casters. A rolling bench can also shift while you work, so look at how the casters lock.
Adjustable-height benches
Some benches change height with adjustable legs or a crank. Note the height range the maker gives and how the height is set. A bench rated at one height may be rated differently at another, so read the conditions.
Folding wall benches
A folding bench fixes to the wall and folds flat when not in use. It saves floor space but depends on the wall it is fixed to. Follow the maker’s mounting method, and ask a qualified professional if you are unsure what your wall can carry.
Top material
Common tops include wood, steel, stainless steel and laminate. They differ in how they handle oil, water, impact and heat. Our pages show the top material only where the maker states it.
Load rating and its conditions
A workbench rating usually covers the whole bench. It can assume evenly spread weight, a particular height setting, or the bench on its feet rather than casters. A shelf below the top may have its own rating. Compare like with like, and read our guide to weight ratings. “Not listed” means the maker does not state it.
Work height and overall height
Work height is the height of the work surface. Overall height includes any back panel, pegboard or shelf above the top. If the bench goes under a window or wall cabinet, check the overall height. For comfort, check the work height against how you stand and what you work on. For wall space above a bench, see slatwall vs. pegboard, and for layout, the planning guide.
