Garage Cabinet Sets vs. Single Cabinets

You can buy garage cabinets as a matched set or add them one at a time. A set looks uniform from day one. Buying piece by piece lets you spread the cost and fit each cabinet to its spot. Either way, check a few things before you commit.

Matching cabinets from one line

Cabinets from the same product line are usually made to line up in height, depth and finish. Cabinets from different lines, even from one maker, may not. If you plan to add pieces later, check that the maker still lists the same line and that its sizes match what you already own. Product lines change, and a finish or depth can change with them.

What a set’s ratings cover

  • A set is several products in one box. Ratings are usually given per shelf, per drawer or per cabinet, not for the set as a whole.
  • A figure for the whole set, where one is given, is a different kind of rating. Do not compare it with a single cabinet’s rating.
  • Ratings often assume each cabinet is assembled as the maker shows and, for tall or wall pieces, anchored or mounted as instructed.

Our guide to weight ratings explains how to compare them. “Not listed” on our pages means the maker does not state that value.

Measure the whole run

Add up the width of every cabinet in the set, plus any gaps or end panels the maker shows, and compare that with your wall. Check the depth against your parking space and door swing. Our planning guide covers measuring the garage.

Worktops

Some sets include a worktop across the base cabinets. Others sell it separately. Check the worktop length against the cabinets below it, whether it overhangs, and whether the maker gives its own rating for it.

Accessories

Wall panels, hooks, lighting and extra shelves are often sold for one system only. Check what each maker says its accessories are compatible with before you mix them. For wall panels above cabinets, see slatwall vs. pegboard.

Mounting

Wall cabinets must be fixed to a wall that can carry them, using the maker’s method, and tall cabinets may need anchoring. Ask a qualified professional if you are unsure about your wall. We have not installed or tested these products.
